SALEM POWER PLANT

From 1999-2004, I documented the area of Salem Power Plant situated in Salem, Beverly and Swampscott Massachusetts area. It was a Coal fired Plant that generated energy for the surrounding areas for more than 50 years. It was also a direct cause of pollution in the area that caused air, water and health problems for many years it was active. There was evidence was black tar and soot on the beaches and on roofs of homes. Children were born prematurely, Cancers were diagnosed and respiratory problems were issues, that directly affected the community for many years. The implications were serious and until too many people were affected and dying and affected, the Power Plant had to shut down. It was one of the worst prolonged environmental issues in the Massachusetts. I was one of the people who fought to keep the conversation going. The series was covered in the Boston Globe in the year 2007 Title “ Capturing the Contrast of the Urban landscape “ with images of the series that shed more light on this important issue.
